Yesterday I went to Home Depot to buy a Toro Leaf Blower/Suckzor machine to help with the clean up of our yard of leaves. Especially all those that get into the rocks. Well, mission accomplished, got the goods and got in the car to leave, drove about 20 feet and the car died.
I have a 2007 Toyota matrix that has been really awesome to date, but it just croaked. Battery and engine light were on, without any warning. I would try and restart it but the battery would not hold its charge. I am partly in the lane leaving HD so I put on my emergency flashers, call Chad and we get a tow truck on order.
I can't tell you the number of people (mostly Women I might add) that honked at me to get out of the way. Dumb beyotches! If I could move do you not think I would? O..and did you not notice my flashers on while you were giving me the look of death?
Anyway, a nice truck driver stops to make sure I am alright. Those guys are always the nicest people. Finally the tow truck comes and takes me and the car to Fountain Tire in St. Albert. They are closing for the day so I won't know until Monday what the dealyo is. They suspect the Alternator croaked. The Fountain Tire folks are awesome though, such great customer service and they gave me and my leaf blower a ride home.
So, tomorrow me and Mr. Chad will be riding the bus to work, that will be kind of fun : ) I have to check if I still have warranty on my car, if not I hope not to big of a repair.

ugh, I know how that is. I've had 2 alternaters go on two of my cars over the years. I'd imagine if it is the alternator you're looking at a couple hundred with parts and labour. Hopefully it's something small and relatively cheap to fix.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny Kelly how if they tell you it's ONLY a few hundred you are relieved? I remember especially with my old cars getting the "clutch" or "transmission" prices. That is when you send the car to the pick a part in the sky! ha ha
ReplyDeleteI just check my warranty and it is 60,000km or 3 years. Unfortunately I bought it April of 07 so even though under the kms I will have to pay.
Just make sure they don't take you for a ride. Don't let those smiles and customer service at Fountain Tire fool you. Not that I am sexist by any means, they sometimes try and take advantage of women and even men who have no idea. Canadian Tire is THE WORST for saying oh and you need this and this and this.
ReplyDeleteJust becareful, if it sounds weird then it probably is. If you go in there saying I have no idea what the issue is then that's open season. Tell them you think either the alternator is dead or something around the battery etc...
You should do a post afterwords, would like to hear what the issue was.
I will let you know what they say. I have had battery go before, but usually once it started would hold the charge. This was really different as it really just died without warning. Will update once I get the diagnosis.
ReplyDeleteNobody with a brain takes their vehicle to Canadian Tire for work...that place is a cesspool. They're charging you something like $75 the second they raise your hood, and their labour charges are insane.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, it is possible for a battery to just stop holding a charge. Could definitely be the alternator as well...and that's more likely since it died while running. I've never heard of a bad battery stalling a car while running. It will just refuse to start up after you turn off the engine.
Hopefully you weren't jumped for your wallets on the bus this morning... oh wait that's only the ETS :) did Chad at least let you ring the bell for your stop? Hopefully your car will be back soon and not have the issues we have had with the jeep, but I'm afraid you are going to get the works from wherever you take your car... our dealership was just as bad from the looks of the other comments as Crappy Tire.
