Grand Standing

So I used to be a Web Designer, that was the good life.  Now I am an IT manager, which really means deal with budgets, timelines and most of all, problems.  Don't get me wrong, there are some great aspects of my job, but far too often I deal with issues.  That's OK, I am pretty good at it for the most part, I really do believe in excellent customer service and always do my best to help resolve anything that comes my way.

But more and more I see this terrible trend.  People that are really not at all interested in solving a problem.  People who only want to make themselves look BIG and make others look small.  Everyone knows these people, they are the finger pointers.

I work with a team of extremely caring hard workers.  We take on way more work than we should often because we always try and get "urgent" work done for clients, usually because they don't bother to plan.  But when a mistake is made (it can happen), the finger pointer will not call you up and say ...hey...can you fix that!? Instead they take great pains in writing a scathing EMAIL and cc every person on the planet.

They always fail to mention their short comings like they called us up with 2 minutes notice and needed it this afternoon, or that they won't get back to us with feedback the 10 times we asked for verification it worked.
Noooo, it's much better to wield your gutless email and try and show yourself up by putting others down.

I especially like those that are then proven wrong and only email you back with apology if you get one.  Suddenly the whole cc list is gone.  I don't operate this way in my personal life and I hate when others do this to me and my colleagues.  If you have a grievance, make a reasonable effort to have it resolved.  If you aren't getting what you feel you deserve then fine, but treat others with the same respect you feel you expect yourself.

In the words of Forest Gump, "that's all i've got to say about that"  : )

90th Bday Party

Today we celebrated my Grandmas 90th birthday.

She looks AMAZING.  I am not kidding, she looks better than many in their 70s.  She still lives in her bi-level home which she has been in since her husband passed away in his 40s.  She has since worked in town after having to leave the farm, looked after her house and huge garden all on her own.  She hardly even takes an aspirin and loves to go "hang out" at the A&W or pizza place.  She has great determination and a postitive attitude which I think are secrets to her success.

Anyway, was a nice day, Chad met a few more of my relatives and now we are full of good food.  I just hope I get some of her genetics!

If I was Mayor

I work in downtown Edmonton, not my favorite place in the world for a few reasons.  It's a bit of a concrete jungle for my liking.  Downtown has really suffered over the years with neglect and although it is getting a lot better in the last few years, there are still things that could be done to make it more people friendly.

Such as, close of Rice Howard Way to traffic.  Maybe not all of it, but certainly some of it could be done as there is no street parking to speak of and the parkades can be accessed from the alleys.  This area has quite a few good restaurants on it (Sherlock Holmes, Sigma, Lux and Moriartys).  There are more on the way as they are currently renovating the previously fire damaged Ramsey Block

I think it would be great if this could become a pedestrian area only and let the restaurants and coffee shops spill out into the street more, where the sun actually can find people. At this very moment I can hear the Indy Race party down on the street and the DJ playing some tunes.  They have tables and chairs set out and there is some life on the street.  Not the typical "dawn of the dead" kind of life, but people getting out on their lunch break kind of life.  This party action is temporary and the street will be returned to its usual purpose on monday.

But If I was Mayor, I would close the street down and help to revitalize this area.

Blog Challenge

I am going to try my hand at blogging.  Not sure what I will blog, but I am going to try and just put out my thoughts on whatever is going on that day.   I like the groovy background as I am a bit of a hippy at heart.  I must be I just said "groovy".
